Garda close case in absence of any new information

Investigation: Gardaí investigating the killing of Brian Murphy have closed the case.

Although a number of other people, apart from the three already convicted, are believed to have been involved in the attack, it seems unlikely they will face charges or that their identities will become known.

A garda last night confirmed that the team of detectives at Donnybrook Garda station believe they have brought the investigation as far as it can go based on current evidence.

The officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the killing, and have no plans to bring charges against any of the people who became known to them during their investigations.

"We feel that we did all we could. We don't think at this stage that we have anything left to investigate," said the garda who worked on the case.

"Everyone who was there [on the night of the killing\] was interviewed. We gathered every bit of information we possibly could and we pursued absolutely everything that cropped up. We feel that it was a good investigation and that the judge has said as much."

If a witness was to come forward with new evidence, it would be pursued.

About 1,000 people were interviewed in the investigation. Almost all the evidence that helped secure the convictions was gathered during interviews.
