Garda arrested in Louth over 'serious crime'

A member of the Garda has been arrested in Co Louth this morning by officers investigating "serious crime".

A member of the Garda has been arrested in Co Louth this morning by officers investigating "serious crime".

A Garda spokesman said the officer (42) was detained at 7 a.m. in the Drogheda area as part of an investigation into armed robberies in north Louth. He had previously been suspended in relation to "other matters".

Gardaí are investigating a series of raids in the Dundalk are in which the perpetrators wore Garda uniforms and claimed they were members of An Garda Síochána.

The man arrested this morning is the fourth person to be arrested in connection with the investigation. Two arrested previously were released without charge; a third person was charged.

The officer is being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, the spokesman said.
