GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING a gun attack in which a man was wounded a number of times have appealed for the public’s help in catching the attacker.

The 23-year-old victim was shot when he answered the door to a caller at his parents’ home at Allenton Green, Tallaght, west Dublin, at around 8pm on Friday.

The caller standing on the doorstep discharged a number of shots from an automatic weapon, wounding the victim in the chest and arm. The gunman then fled the immediate vicinity on foot. It is unclear if he was driven away by a waiting car.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to Tallaght hospital. He has undergone surgery and his condition has been described as critical but stable. He is expected to survive.

Garda sources said the injured man is not known to them. Detectives are still trying to establish a motive for the attack but do not believe at this stage that it is linked to gangland crime.

Gardaí are exploring if the victim had any recent altercations that may have led to his shooting as part of a personal row.

Detectives are hopeful the man may be able to assist the investigation in this regard or rule out the possibility he had been shot over a personal matter. The investigating team is also actively exploring the possibility that the man was shot in a case of mistaken identity or that an associate of his was the intended target.

Gardaí conducted door-to-door inquiries and have spoken to a number of the man’s family who were in the house last Friday evening. They have appealed for information about the attack. The investigating team is based in Tallaght Garda station and can be contacted at (01) 666 6000.
