Gardaí in Co Carlow have appealed for witnesses to a collision between two cars at Tullow on Saturday morning which claimed the lives of two people and left two others injured.

James Cody (21), Shillelagh Grove, Tullow, and Mona Martin (59), of Ballingale, Ferns, Co Wexford, were killed in the crash, which happened shortly after 9am.

Ms Martin was travelling with her sister and niece in the direction of Tullow when the collision occurred at a notorious black spot at Ardristan.

Driving conditions at the time were said to be good. Emergency services from nearby areas were on the scene within minutes. All were taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

However, both Ms Martin and Mr Maher subsequently died.

The two women travelling with Ms Martin are said to be in a stable condition at the same hospital.

In Mullingar, a 27-year-old male pedestrian was killed on the N4 bypass after he was struck by a car shortly before 6am yesterday. Any witnesses to this collision are asked to contact gardaí at Mullingar on 044-9384000.

Another pedestrian died on Saturday after being struck by a car at Arderrow, Ballyhooley Road, Cork, at 4.30am.

The 43-year-old male was removed to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. No other person was injured.

Gardaí later named the dead man as John Stillwell, of Lishorna, White's Cross, Cork.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man died after his vehicle struck a fence on the old Kildare Road in the Curragh, Co Kildare, at 3.20am on Saturday.

A 23-year-old female passenger, was uninjured in the incident. The victim was later named as David Lawlor Ward (24), Ivy Dean, Beechgrove, Kildare.

Also yesterday, gardaí named two victims of traffic collisions that took place last week. Gavin Campbell (19), of Bridgend, Co Donegal, died on Tuesday in a collision at Burnfoot and Francis Percy (32), from Rosemount, Thurles, Co Tipperary, was killed in a collision near Templemore on Wednesday.
