Galway may play host to a world science olympiad in four years' time, if Minister of State for European Affairs Noel Treacy has his way.

Speaking at the opening yesterday of a one-day exhibition as part of the Galway Science and Technology Festival, Mr Treacy said he wanted to see the city hosting such an event in 2010.

Last year, Galway hosted the EU Science Olympiad involving 10 member states, including the Republic.

Newton's theories, Boyle's law and Galileo's discoveries were among the themes at the Salthill event.
