Galway corporation last night unanimously rejected a proposed waste incinerator for the outskirts of the city. The 15 members voted in favour of a joint plan for the city and county, but against an overall Connacht Draft Waste Management Plan.
The proposed thermal treatment plant was central to the report prepared by consultants M.C. O'Sullivan and Co. The corporation members opted for a local waste management plan with maximum recycling and the option of putting the rest of the city's waste in a new landfill site.
Afterwards, the Mayor, Mr Martin Quinn, expressed confidence that the people of the city could reach maximum recycling targets.
