A man appeared before a special court sitting in Galway yesterday afternoon, charged with the murder of man who was stabbed to death in the city over the weekend.
Mr Michael Reilly (51), of Corrach Bhui, Rahoon, Galway, was charged with the murder of Mr Patrick Shaughnessy (28), late of Coogan Park, Galway, at Corrach Bhui, on May 25th.
Det Sgt Sean O'Grady gave evidence that he charged the defendant at 11.55 a.m. yesterday with the murder of Mr Shaughnessy.
Mr Reilly, who was dressed in a navy jumper and navy track suit bottoms, replied, "What is common law? I didn't do it. I'm not guilty," to the charge.
Supt Mick Curley applied to have Mr Reilly remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court next Friday.
Judge John Garavan told the accused he was facing the charge of murder and asked if he wished to apply for free legal aid.
Mr Reilly said, "I'm not guilty of anything like that," before saying he wished to apply for free legal aid.
Judge Garavan then remanded him in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear before Galway District Court today, where he can apply for free legal aid and have a solicitor appointed to represent him.
