Irish raider Galileo won the Epsom Derby today to give trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Michael Kinane their second Classic in two days - they took the English Oaks yesterday.
Galileo's 11/4 co-favourite Golan, ridden by Pat Eddery and trained by Michael Stoute, came in three-and-a-half-lengths behind in second while the heavily backed Godolphin Operation's Tobougg, ridden by Frankie Dettori, was third.
However, the stewards ordered an enquiry into the minor placings as Golan, who was bidding to become the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to do the 2000 Guineas and Derby double, appeared to interfere with Perfect Sunday while they also were looking into Tobougg perhaps interfering with Storming Home.
Kinane, 41 and winning his second Derby, brought Galileo, who was giving the racing world's greatest sire Sadlers Wells his first win in the race, smoothly down the outside and hit the front with a furlong-and-a-half to race.
He was never challenged as Golan launched his chellenge too late and Tobougg, who had been held in the rear of the 12-horse field, ran on through the tired remainder.
"I drew stall 10 both days so it was obviously a good omen!" Kinane joked, referring to Friday's win with Imagine.
"We were in the ideal position and I knew it would take something special to get past him," he added.
