Twenty-two-year-old Mark McGovern has responded well to medical treatment and his family, who are with him at San Francisco General Hospital, have been told there is hope he will make a recovery.

A hospital representative said his condition remains “critical” but privately doctors have said his chances of recovery have improved in the past two days.

He was playing his first game for the Ulster SF club last Saturday evening when he suffered a severe head injury.

So far nobody has said they saw him being struck but two witnesses told police they saw a member of the opposing team stand over him and say, “you won’t get up from that” as he lay on the ground.

Police have identified the player but no arrests have yet been made.

Investigators said they are still conducting interviews.
