American Jim Furyk was celebrating his first major title today after a victory he described as "beyond my dreams".

The 33-year-old won the United States Open by three strokes from Australian Stephen Leaney at Olympia Fields near Chicago last night.

Furyk equalled the lowest total in the 108-year history of the championship when a final round 72 gave him the trophy on the eight-under-par mark of 272, despite bogeying the last two holes.

Furyk had also set 36-hole and 54-hole scoring records at a course which showed its teeth only on the final day, leaving just four players under par.

The most unnerving moment for him on the last day was the appearance of a blonde streaker, who ducked under the ropes and offered Furyk some flowers.

"I was definitely caught off guard by that," he said afterwards. "I turned around and she was only four feet from me. It was a total shock".

Three clear overnight, Furyk stretched that to five with seven to play and even though it was not entirely plain-sailing from there a birdie at the 14th kept him in control and he had the luxury of a four-stroke cushion coming to the last.

"It's nice to know you can make a double bogey and once I had hit my second shot I knew I had done it." That he three-putted for bogey mattered only for the record.
