Funeral arrangements for the late John McGahern

The body of the late John McGahern will leave Dublin's Mater Private hospital at 8am this morning for his funeral Mass and burial in Co Leitrim.

The funeral cortege is to make its way to Aughawillan via Longford town, to Mohill in Co Leitrim, and from there to Ballinamore, before arrival at St Patrick's church before midday.

Mass is scheduled for noon and will be celebrated by Fr Liam Kelly of Crosskeys parish in Co Cavan.

A close friend of McGahern and his wife, Madeline Green, for more than 30 years, he is also related to the author. Fr Kelly's father and McGahern's mother, Susan McManus, were cousins. Fr Kelly will also deliver the homily.

Afterwards, burial will take place at the nearby graveyard where McGahern's mother was buried more than 61 years ago, following her death by cancer also.
