France will back Washington's UN resolution on Iraq if it is modified to include more explicit references to the role of the United Nations, French president Mr Jacques Chirac said today.
Chirac was quoted by his spokeswoman as saying it was "possible to improve the text appreciably which would allow everyone to see it favourably."
The president was speaking during lunch with the Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik.
Backed by Britain and Spain, the United States has put forward a UN resolution which would give the occupying forces control of Iraq's oil revenues and a key role in setting up a new government, with the United Nations confined mainly to humanitarian work.
