Four fishermen were rescued today after their boat caught fire in the Irish Sea.

The crew of the Noronya, from Kilkeel, Co Down, abandoned the burning vessel about 20 miles off the coast of Howth Head in Co Dublin.

They alerted the Belfast Coastguard at around 12.45am, and an operation was launched to get the men from a liferaft.

A fisheries research boat, Corystes, picked them up. None of the crew was injured.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said a rescue helicopter was also at the scene.

He added that the fire, which was still burning, had probably started in the Noronya's engine room.
