Four killed in traffic accidents

Four people were killed on the Republic's roads since last Wednesday, two of them as the bank holiday weekend got under way.

At Monasterevin, Co Kildare, Ms Marie-Louise Duffy was killed when the motorbike on which she was travelling collided with a car and a jeep. Ms Duffy who was described as being in her early 30s, was from Drogheda, Co Louth. The accident happened at 12.40 p.m. on Saturday.

Yesterday morning, Mr Gary Cotter was killed when the car in which he was a passenger left the road at about 4.50 a.m at Moyaska, near Kilrush, Co Clare. Mr Cotter (20) was from Henry Street, Kilrush. The 19 year-old male driver of the car received minor injuries.

Last Friday, Mr Tony Cronin (29), Newpark, Kilkenny was killed when his motorbike collided with a lorry on the Cahir to Mitchelstown Road. The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. On Wednesday a 14 year-old boy, Adam Connolly, was killed when when the car in which he was a passenger hit a truck at Macroom, Co Cork.

The deaths bring to 104 the number of people killed on the Republic's roads so far this year. The figures compare to just 82 for the same period last year. The National Safety Council has reminded motorists to slow down, wear seat belts and never drink and drive.
