The former Derry footballer Anthony Tohill has undergone eye and facial surgery after suffering facial injuries as a result of an accident while cutting firewood at his home on Monday. A family spokesman said he was comfortable "and has made a positive start to his recovery".

The family said they had been greatly comforted by the many messages of support and wished to thank everyone for their kindness. They said that no further statements would be issued and they appealed for the privacy of the family to be respected.

Tohill was a member of Derry’s all-Ireland senior football championship winning team in 1993, and also won Ulster senior titles in a distinguished playing career.
