Philadelphia - Women who drink lots of fluid are less likely to suffer from kidney stones, especially if their intake includes coffee, tea and wine, according to a wide-ranging study released yesterday. Boston doctors at Brigham and Women's Hospital and at the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who drank more than 2.5 litres a day were one-third less likely to develop kidney problems than those who drank less than 1.5 litres.
The study, published in today's issue of the American College of Physicians' Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at the link between kidney stones and 17 beverages. It suggested that certain drinks can have a greater effect on kidney health. For instance, the findings linked women who drank a 240 millilitre serving of wine with a 59 per cent decrease in risk for kidney stones.
