Water flouridation poses a threat to health and the environment, the Green Party has warned.

The party's environments spokesman, Mr Gerry Boland, said recent research suggested that flouridation may not be effective in combating dental problems and flouride ingestion may lead to brain defects in children.

"Flouride is a highly toxic and highly corrosive liquid and is categorised as a cumulative poison," said Mr Boland.

He was responding to an item on water flouridation on the RTE Radio programme, Morning Ireland, earlier this week.
