Five Irish fishermen were rescued by the crew of a French fishing vessel when they were forced to abandon their trawler 13 miles north of Downpatrick Head, Co Mayo, early yesterday morning.

The Capallban, a 20 metre trawler based in Co Galway, issued a distress call after a fire broke out in its engine room. The five crew members were later picked up by the French fishing boat, Baccarate.
