The Government has approved five promotions within An Garda Síochána to the ranks of superintendent and chief superintendent.

Supt Philip Moynihan, who has most recently been based at Bray, Co Wicklow, is being promoted to the rank of chief supterintendent. The 55-year-old from Roscommon has been a member of the force for 33 years.

Those being promoted from inspector to superintendent are Inspectors John Paul Quirke, Sarah Martin Meyler, Michael Jackson and Patrick Mangan.

John Paul Quirke (46) is from Galway and joined the force in 1979.

Sarah Martin Meyler (42) is from Wexford. She became a garda in 1984.

Michael Jackson (45) is from Dublin and joined the force in 1980.

Patrick Mangan (45) is from Limerick and has served in stations in Monaghan, Wicklow and Dublin. He joined the force in 1977.

The appointments, which were recommended by Minister for Justice Michael McDowell, are effective from today. Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy will decide where the appointees are to be posted.
