Five people killed on Irish roads overnight

Five people have been killed on Irish roads over the past 24 hours.

Three men were killed in Co Laois last night when the car they were travelling in lost control and overturned.

A Garda spokeswoman said three men died after being thrown some distance from the car. There were no other vehicles involved in the accident, which happened at about 1 a.m. at Oakvale, Stradbally. The car had been travelling from Carlow town.

None of the three men, who were in their twenties and thirties, have yet been named.

A fourth man who was badly injured in the crash has been taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for treatment. His condition is unknown.

A Garda in his forties killed in an accident in Co Louth yesterday evening has been named as Det Desmond Dixon. The 40-year-old garda, from Artane in north Dublin died when his unmarked patrol car collided with another car on the Dundalk bypass. The driver of the second car is being treated in hospital.

A woman who was was killed when her car lost control and hit a bank on the road between Skerries and Rush in north Co Dublin yesterday evening has been named as 30-year-old Dionne Murphy from Rush.

She was rushed to Beaumont Hospital but was pronouced dead on arrival.

Gardaí at Dundrum in Dublin are appealing for witnesses to a traffic incident which happened last night.

The driver of a red/white Yamaha motorcycle was seriously injured when he lost control of his motorcycle at the junction of Upper Kilmacud Road and Eden Park avenue.
