Five people were killed and 29 were injured after a bus went off a road in northern Spain and crashed today.

Ten of the injured are said to be in a serious condition.

The bus, which had Moroccan licence plates, was heading south from France when it crashed near the Spanish city of Burgos at 2 a.m. local time, a local government official said. It was not known why the bus left the road, as there was no ice nor fog, he added.

Spanish press agency EFE said there were 37 people on the bus when it crashed.

The deaths bring the total of traffic fatalities to 78 since December 23rd, according to the national traffic department's figures. Thirty-nine of them were killed over the Christmas holiday weekend.

The Spanish traffic department said 195 people were killed during the Christmas and New Year holiday period last year.
