A fire has halted production at the Irish Cement Factory in Limerick, it emerged today.

A fire has halted production at the Irish Cement Factory in Limerick, it emerged today.

The fire is understood to have started on a conveyor belt at the plant on Dock Road shortly after 7 a.m.

It was initially feared the blaze might spread to a nearby coal mound which is used to service the kiln.

Three units of the Limerick firebrigade were called to the scene and quickly brought the fire under control.

The company which produces one million tonnes of cement annually said a full investigation was underway.
