An investigation began yesterday into the cause of a fire which broke out in the 70 foot boiler house at Aughinish Alumina in the Shannon estuary, the largest project of its kind in Europe and Ireland's biggest private industry.

Fire services from neighbouring towns were called in to assist the factory brigade. A spokesman for the £7 billion Swiss-owned plant, which employs 540 people, said nobody was injured.
