Wet and windy weather conditions didn't deter committed protesters in Cork from participating in the last of a series of picnic protests at Old Head of Kinsale, yesterday.

Over 100 protesters took part in the Sunday afternoon picnic, which is part of a three-year campaign to reopen a former walking amenity to the public.

Following the decision of the Supreme Court last March, there is no public right of access to the Old Head, which was converted into a private golf course in 1997 and has achieved a reputation worldwide over the last six years.

However, according to the Workers' Party, the amenity was open to the public for centuries and is steeped in history and beauty.

Cork Workers' Party representative, Mr Ted Tynan, who participated in yesterday's picnic said: "It's very disappointing that this magnificent amenity is now closed off as it attracts tourists from around the world who now can't get past a set of locked gates. But we plan to keep protesting to keep it open so that people aren't turned away."

Yesterday's protest signalled the end of the summer picnic outings. However, Mr Tynan added that campaigners might organise another outing in the run-up to Christmas.

"Most of us are hill-walkers and used to the weather so the bad elements don't keep us away," he added.
