The IDA must immediately intervene to save almost 50 jobs lost with the closure of Microthermn Ltd in Bruff today, a local TD has said.
Fine Gael deputy for Limerick West Dan Neville said the job losses were "devastating news".
"The news that Microtherm Ltd. is closed is a major blow to Bruff and in particular to the staff who without any notice find themselves without employment," he said.
"This is particularly devastating for the town as it is losing its biggest employer which has been a mainstay of employment for over 30 years."
Workers at the plant were told of the decision to close yesterday morning. In a statement, the directors aid the company was insolvent and that they had applied to the creditors to have the plant wound up voluntarily.
"The IDA must immediately intervene and have discussions with the parent company to explore a package to save the jobs and if this is not possible to ensure that a replacement industry is identified as soon as possible," Mr Neville said.
"Coming on top of the announcement of the difficulties in Castlemahon Poultry Products, it is a second severe blow to employment in Limerick West. The Government has dismally failed in creating employment in the constituency."
