If returned to Government, Fianna Fail will establish a statutory independent Food Quality Authority to guarantee the safety and quality of food, the party's spokesman on agriculture, Mr Joe Walsh, has said.

Following a briefing of his parliamentary party colleagues, Mr Walsh said the new body would be a science based organisation. There was now a "complete lack of confidence among consumers in the purity and safety of Irish food", he added.
