CONSTANT behind the scenes consultations will take place between Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats to ensure public policy divisions are avoided.

The decision to coordinate the campaigns follows a meeting between the Fianna Fail leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, and the Progressive Democrats' leader, Ms Mary Harney, on Sunday. Sources said it was "frank and forthright".

Ms Harney yesterday softened her party's stance and issued a statement expressing commitment to "partnership and consultation in the public service" and supporting Fianna Fail's position.
