THE Irish Presidency of the European Union has reiterated the Union's "deep concern" about the situation in Burundi, where thousands of people have died recently and there are fears of more mass killings.
In a statement on behalf of the EU issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the presidency urges all sides to refrain from violence and to commit themselves to work towards a negotiated, peaceful settlement of the crisis in the country.
"The European Union wishes to express its support for the regional leaders, the Organisation of African Unity and the President of Tanzania, Mr Julius Nyerere, in the efforts which they have been making to assist Burundi to peacefully overcome the grave crisis which it is experiencing, and encourages them to continue their efforts to facilitate the search for a political solution.
"The European Union considers it essential for a dialogue to be organised without delay, bringing together all of Burundi's political forces without exception, including representatives of civil society, in order to negotiate a democratic, just consensus, ensuring security for all."
