The Colombian paramilitary group that three Irishmen are under investigation for aiding have announced an end to their campaign of mass civilian kidnappings.

The Colombian government and FARC rebels agreed to continue the peace process, according to official sources.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has also given its agreement to study "immediately" the possibility of a ceasefire, the sources said.

The news came as President Andres Pastrana met with top rebel military commanders to discuss the current "critical" moment of the peace process, just four days before a deadline governing the status of a rebel safe haven was due to expire.
