Famine ship arrives in Florida after Atlantic crossing

The Famine replica ship Jeanie Johnston has arrived in the United States after a two-month Atlantic crossing.

The ship, skippered by Captain Tom McCarthy, arrived in Florida at the Palm Beach Maritime Museum's dock, Peanut Island safely and on time, 4 p.m. Irish time.

The €15 million replica famine ship left Fenit Harbour in Co Kerry on February 16th.

However, the following day the ship was forced to take shelter in Valentia Harbour due to gale force eight southeasterly winds. The ship then sailed to Tenerife in the Canary Islands before finally setting off on its final leg of the voyage to Florida in mid-March.

Following visits to ports along the east coast south of Boston up to late July, the ship will continue to north of Boston during August and September, concluding its tour in Canada where the original Jeanie Johnstonwas built in 1847.

It will return to Tralee in early October.
