Athletics: Irish athlete Martin Fagan finished a very creditable sixth in today's Great North Run in Britain.
The 25-year-old Mullingar runner was the first European home in a new personal-best time of 1 hour 2 minutes 20 seconds (01:02:20) for the half-marathon distance.
A hamstring injury forced Fagan to withdraw from the Olympic Marathon in Beijing in August.
Today's race was won by Olympic bronze medallist Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia in a time of 59 minutes 45 seconds.
He led from start to finish and came home just under two minutes ahead of compatriot Gebre Gebremariam.
The woman's race was won by Ethiopia's Gete Wami in a time of 68 minutes 51 seconds.
She won in a close finish from Kenyan and long-time leader Magdelane Mukunzi and Britain's Jo Pavey who finished in third place.
