The Government decided at its meeting on Tuesday to increase the number of judges of the Circuit Court from 27 to the statutory limit of 28, and provide the necessary additional support staff, writes Carol Coulter, Legal Affairs Correspondent.

The need for the additional judge has arisen largely from the backlog in cases, especially in the family law area, following the introduction of divorce.
