A cache of fireworks stored in a wooden house in eastern China has exploded, killing at least 20 people and destroying several buildings.

The blast, in a village in Minhou county, near Fujian province's capital of Fuzhou, injured more than 40 people and collapsed at least five buildings yesterday evening, the China News Agency said.

The agency said the explosion left a crater two metres deep and 20 metres in diameter.

Explosives or fireworks manufactured and stored illegally or unsafely kill hundreds each year in China's rural areas.

In another fireworks blast in the county last month, five people were killed and 36 people were injured.
