London - A government BSE expert yesterday said there was a "distinct possibility" that the disease existed among Britain's flock of 42 million sheep as EU ministers moved to step up meat safety measures.

The warning comes after the Consumers' Association called on the government to advise parents of young children not to feed their offspring lamb and other sheep meat. As consumers' confusion grew, the government stressed that there was no scientific evidence of BSE in sheep.
