The High Court was told yesterday a settlement had been reached in a legal challenge by a private third-level college, some of its students and the University of Wales to the Law Society's refusal to grant them the same exemptions from Law Society examinations as had been available to students from other Irish colleges.

The proceedings had been taken by the University of Wales, Cardiff; Mr Raymond Kearns, trading as Portobello College, Dublin; and up to 12 student plaintiffs against the Law Society and the State. The action had been running for five days before the settlement was announced.

Counsel for both sides said it was agreed the settlement was a full and final settlement of all of the claims of plaintiffs listed in a schedule submitted to the court.
