BRUSSELS - A former Belgian defence minister, Mr Guy Coeme, is resigning his seat in parliament following his conviction in a fraud trial.

Mr Coeme, also a former deputy prime minister, was convicted last week of fraud and abuse of public office, given a two-year suspended jail sentence and ordered to repay sums illegally received from political research firm lnusop, which is at the heart of the scandal.
