Event called off as tension runs high

POLITICAL tension in Castlederg was yesterday cited as the reason for the cancellation of the annual Kileter Agricultural Show.

The show and sheepdog trials were due to take place next Wednesday, but the organisers have said the event will not go ahead.

Tension has been high in the area since the Drumcree stand off, with disturbances and calls for a boycott of Protestant businesses in the town.

A spokesman for the show committee refused to elaborate on the brief statement. But one committee member admitted that recent political events had been taken into consideration.

The show, organised by the Castlederg District Community Development Association, is expected to resume next year.
