Ten west of Ireland communities have been awarded the first Beatha Environmental Quality Mark under the EU-sponsored Eco labelling project.
The Beatha or "life" symbol denotes areas with a consistent commitment to the environment. The Eco-labelling project is jointly funded by the EU LIFE programme and NASC, a joint project involving Udaras na Gaeltachta, University of Galway and six local authorities. The successful communities in Donegal were in the south-west, mid-west and Fanad peninsula; in Mayo, the Erris peninsula, Ballycastle/Belderrig, Ballintubber, Inishturk, Clare island; in Galway, west Connemara and the Joyce country; and Mount Brandon, Co Kerry.
