STRASBOURG - The European Parliament criticised European Union countries yesterday for failing properly to back Mr Hans Koschnick, the first EU administrator of the divided eastern Bosnian city of Mostar.

The EU took over the running of Mostar, divided between Croats and Muslims in July 1994. Its mandate expires at the end of 1996.

Mr Koschnick, the former mayor of Bremen in Germany, resigned in February this year after failing to promote a plan to reunify the city.

The move comes after a report from the European Court of Auditors, which criticised aspects of the EU's administration of the divided city.
