An Eircom clerical worker has been awarded €20,000 for discrimination after being repeatedly passed over for promotion in favour of male colleagues.

Equality officer, Ms Anne-Marie Lynch, said the company should develop a comprehensive equality policy and conduct proper job appraisals.

The complaint was brought by a clerical staff officer, Ms Brigid Boland, who transferred from the civil service to Eircom's predecessor Telecom Eireann in 1987.

Her work involved overseeing the typing pool in customer accounts credit control.

In 1995 typing and credit control functions were amalgamated and Ms Boland continued in her supervisory role for both.

Since then she said she had been consistently passed over in favour of junior male colleagues.
