Weather warning lifted but motorists urged to take extra care

Met Éireann has lifted an orange level rainfall warning in place for Leinster but motorists are being urged to be extremely cautious.

There is excess surface water on many roads as well as some road closures today .Up to 60mm of water had been expected to fall yesterday evening and overnight.

The M1 motorway between Donabate and the Dublin airport junction southbound is closed due to flooding, AA Roadwatch said today. Diversions are in place.

In Blackrock, Dublin flooding is partially blocking both lanes on Temple Hill at the Newtownpark Ave Junction, AA Roadwatch has said.

AA Roadwatch has warned motorists of spot flooding and heavy surface water on roads across the State. It urged motorists to take extreme care.

Gardai also warned of surface water at the Rathcoole junction of the N7 posing risks to motorists.

Met Éireann has said the rain has become mainly light across the country this morning. It expects the sunny spells and scattered showers over Munster to extend to other parts of the state during the afternoon. However Ulster and north Leinster will remain cloudy and damp until this evening, it said.

But the bank holiday weekend will not be a total washout with a lot of dry weather forecast for tomorrow, spells of sunshine and highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees.

Yesterday gardaí reported flooding on several Dublin roads including near Santry and Dalkey and several road incidents were reported.

Two prisoners had to be moved from Ballymun Garda station in Dublin yesterday morning due to flooding in the station, gardaí said.
