RIAI Irish architecture awards shortlist announced

From an Aldi store in Terenure to Humewood Castle in Co Wicklow, and from England to Peru, a total of 52 projects have been included on this year's RIAI Irish Architecture Awards shortlist.

There were 180 entries, the highest number in five years, perhaps reflecting the pick-up in the economy. The number of buildings designed abroad also indicate that architects found work elsewhere during the recession, something set to continue in more buoyant times as Irish designers have established a global reputation.

"We are delighted to see Irish architecture being celebrated at home and abroad," said chair of the jury Robin Mandal.

The shortlist for the awards spans 17 categories, including education, health and commercial buildings, homes, sustainability and conservation. New categories this year include best fit-out, best research and best emerging practice.

Generous glazing, clever use of timber, warm brick, some strong, solid forms and cool concrete are major themes on the shortlist.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on June 24th.

Before then people will be able to vote for the Public Choice Award, now in its ninth year. They can view the shortlist and vote online at irisharchitectureawards.ie or through the RIAI Facebook page.
