Rainfall weather warning issued for Munster and Leinster

Rainfall weather warnings have been issued for Munster and Leinster, in place over Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

Met Éireann has warned a spell of heavy rain is due to pass across the south of the country from Tuesday afternoon, across to the eastern coast.

The national forecaster said it expects between 25 and 35mm of rain, heaviest along the south and eastern coastal counties.

The yellow weather warning is in place from 3pm Tuesday to 6am Wednesday. The heavy rain could lead to spot flooding in parts of the country, along the coast.

Met Éireann’s forecast for Tuesday night said temperatures will drop to as low as two degrees. Blustery winds will hit east and southern counties, before easing off into Wednesday morning, the forecaster said.

The forecaster also has a status yellow marine weather warning in place, due to gale force winds at sea.

Southerly winds will reach gale force eight off the Irish coast for periods over Tuesday night. The areas covered by the marine weather warning include waters off Wicklow Head down to Hook Head, Co Wexford, and parts of the south Irish Sea.

The period of choppy weather comes after the warmest winter period on record, according to a summary of the past season by Met Éireann.

Weather stations across the country saw record high temperatures, and low rainfall and frost.
