Power cuts prompt boil water notices and supply disruptions

Several county councils have issued a boil water notices or warned of supply disruption due to power cuts . Counties with water problems today include Limerick, Kerry, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Waterford, Clare and Tipperary.

All households and businesses in Co Limerick have been issued with a boil water notice while residents in parts of Co Clare are facing water shortages due to power cuts.

Limerick County Council said all water used for drinking, cooking, food preparation, brushing of teeth and ice making must be boiled first.

The council says the extensive power outages across the county were affecting water pumping stations and treatment plants.

As a result the council said it was “not in a position to guarantee that water supplies throughout the county are treated to the standards required by the drinking water regulations.”

Water supplies in Limerick city and suburbs are not affected.

A council spokesperson said the boil notice was likely to remain in place for a number of days.

Kerry County Council said water in many areas must be boiled and water tankers will be in locations around the county without water.

Cork County Council said resumption of water supply would be on an “ongoing basis”.

Waterford County Council said there would be disruption to water supply in Tramore until tonight. A precautionary boil water notice has been issued by South Tipperary County Council today.

Kildare County Council said the pumphouse at Bawnogues is without electricity and this has caused the levels at Slievrue Reservoir to drop. “Residents in Slieverue, Tipperkevin, Glenmore and surrounding areas will experience a loss of supply and/or low water pressure until the electricity is restored and the reservoir levels rise,” it said.

In Co Meath, the council warned of a possible disruption of supply near Dunboyne due to an ESB fault at a pumping station.

Clare County Council has sent water tankers to a number of locations due to ongoing problems with water supply.

Tankers are providing water today at Sixmilebridge (in the Square) between 1.30pm and 5pm; in Kilmurry, in the Church carpark, between 4pm and 5pm; in Kilkishen, outside the GAA pitch, between 5.30pm and 6.30pm and in Killaloe, in Supervalu carpark between 3pm and 5pm.
