Councils to receive €85million for road repairs following storms

About €85 million will the given to councils to fix roads across the country after the storms and flood damage.

Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe said on Friday the money from the severe weather fund would ensure local and regional roads were repaired as quickly as possible.

The plan will mainly focus on repairs, draining and preventative work to address roads that repeatedly flood every year. Mr Donohoe said serious damage had been caused to roads by floods in recent months.

“This had a significant impact on communities of all sizes,” he said. “I am satisfied that these allocations will be sufficient to repair all of damage caused to local and regional roads by recent weather events and to allow for significant preventative works to be carried out so that the destruction we have seen in recent months can be avoided for communities in the future.”

Transport Infrastructure Ireland will also get €8 million for works on national roads and €8 million to Irish Rail for rail repairs.

Mr Donohoe said further funding would be allocated councils in May, with a total of €106 million to be distributed this year.

This money will be used by council to analyse proposed measures such as building specialist bridges.
