ATHY Urban District Council held an emergency meeting with gardai last night to discuss how to combat a recent upsurge in crime in the Co Kildare town.

The chairman of the UDC, Mr Jack Wall, said a minority of local youths were responsible for the crime wave.

Recently, elderly man's house had been petrol bombed. Last weekend, acid had been poured over a dozen cars and tyres were slashed.

The week before, three youths on stolen horses were confronted by gardai. After stoning the squad car, two of the youths were arrested.
