Asuncion - The Paraguayan President, Mr Luis Gonzalez Macchi, has signed a decree lifting a 12-day state of emergency imposed in the wake of a failed military coup, a senior official said yesterday. Mr Macchi signed the decree at the presidential residence, judicial adviser Mr Agustin Gonzalez Insfran said.

Mr Macchi originally declared a state of emergency on March 19th. The coup attempt was blamed on troops loyal to fugitive Gen Lino Oviedo, wanted in connection with the March 1998 murder of vice-president Luis Maria Argana.
