A five-storey residential building in the poor Cairo suburb of Giza has collapsed, killing eleven people, including a mother and her two daughters, and injuring 10 others, security sources said today.

The mother was found dead still clutching her two daughters, the sources said.

The collapse of the building yesterday also killed the wife of the building's late owner, who was himself killed along with his son in a car accident in April.

Sources said the building was being renovated without professional supervision. Police were investigating the accident, they said.

Egypt has had a spate of building collapses in recent years blamed on lax building regulations.
