A man was being interviewed by gardaí last night after an elderly brother and sister were knocked down and killed while crossing the road in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.

The incident occurred at traffic lights on the main street. The victims died at the scene.

They have been named as Ms Bridget Brodigan (84) and her 80-year-old brother, Mr Anthony Brodigan. They were from Kingscourt in Co Cavan.

The town centre was closed to traffic for several hours after the crash. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses.
