At least eight miners were killed in a mine explosion in Silesia, southwestern Poland, local television reported this evening.
Police and local officials could not confirm the figure. They said they knew only of two deaths and said 23 miners remained missing.
Officials lost contact with the men at the mine near the city of Ruda Slaska after what may have been an explosion, Zbigniew Madej, spokesman for the Southern Mining Co., said on TVN24 television.
